Abstract: The effect of particulate reinforcements on the damping behavior of magnesium, which is supposed to be a promising matrix material, was investigated. Magnesium was selected for the process because of its creep resistance, low density, high specific stiffness, good dimensional stability and superior damping capacity. The overall damping capacity of the metal matrix composite (MMC) is directly related to the damping capacity of its constituents. A comparison of the damping factor reveals that addition of sub-micron sized SiC particles to the Mg metal matrix increases the overall damping.
