dc.description.abstractThe objective of this study is to make a comparative evaluation of the block tools with conventional shank-type tools. Performance evaluation of both types of tools has been carried out through cutting and modal analysis tests. Under same cutting conditions used, it has been found that the block tool has a higher natural frequency and a smaller amplitude of vibration than that of the conventional tool during the cutting process. Moreover, the surface finish of workpieces produced using the block tool are found to be more consistent and better than that of the conventional tool. Results of modal analysis test substantiate the findings of cutting tests confirming that both natural frequency and damping are higher for block tools as compared to the shank-type tools.
