Abstract: Analysis of the effects of variation of the process parameters on the temperature distribution and the profile of hardened zones is extremely complicated. In this paper, existing closed-form solutions for simple heat conduction problems are used to re-examine the published data of Yang et al. It is found that in spite of the limitations and over-simplifications of these solutions, satisfactory explanation of the observed phenomena can be made, especially in respect of the profile of the hardened zones and the effect of the power of the laser on the case-depths. © 1990.
