ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | The aim of the present investigation is to study the mechanical properties of as-cast and heat-treated ZA-27 zinc-aluminium alloy/graphite particulate composites containing graphite particles of size 90-150 μm and of content ranging from 0 to 5% by weight. The vortex method of production was employed, in which the graphite particles were poured into the vortex created by stirring the molten metal by means of a mechanical agitator. Heat treatment was performed at 280°C for durations of 1, 2, 3 and 4 h, respectively. The results of this study revealed that as graphite composition was increased, there were significant increases in the ductility, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and compressive strength of the composite, accompanied by a tremendous drop in the hardness of the material. Heat treatment was found to have a similar effect. An attempt is made in the paper to furnish explanations for these phenomena. © 1997 Elsevier Science Limited.
