Abstract: Polymer composite materials are found to be efficient energy absorbers and suitable for crash worthy structural applications. This paper describes crush test methods, and definitions of energy absorption characteristics such as crushing process, crushing mode and specific energy absorption capability. Through on-going research program a considerable amount of experimental data on the energy absorption characteristics of polymer composite materials has been generated. The cause/effect relationships between material property variables, geometrical variables, testing variables (crushing speed, testing temperature and testing environment) and the energy absorption characteristics of polymer composite materials are described. © 1998 Trans Tech Publications.
