Abstract: A simple numerical method based on the Rayleigh principle and sub-sectioning of a plate domain is presented to obtain the buckling loads for fundamental buckling modes of isotropic annular plates with stepped variation in thickness. An annular plate is divided into two sub-domains by a step. For an annular plate with a small variation in thickness across the step, the same assumed deflection function is used for both sub-domains. The boundary condition at a step is assumed to be free for one of the sub-domains with a thicker segment for a large step with a large variation in thickness across the step. The admission functions used for the Rayleigh method are single-term deflection functions which satisfy the respective boundary conditions of the sub-domains. Numerical results for buckling loads are presented for an annular plate with a step for a wide range of thickness ratios. © 1992.
