A review of all the methods of calculating the temperature generated during steady machining is carried out. Broadly speaking, these can be classified into five categories, namely, the moving heat source method, the image sources method, the finite difference method, semi-analytical methods and the finite element method. The main assumptions and boundary conditions used in each research work are highlighted and discussed. Typical results are presented also in some cases. © 1993.
