Abstract: A fast algorithm for contingency evaluation of power systems is presented. The salient features of the algorithm are (i) elimination of load busbars during the iterative process, (ii) simulation of network outages by current injections and (iii) taking advantage of the relative magnitudes of network voltage in-phase and quadrature components in approximating the mathematical expression for power flow at a bus. The three features result in a fast contingency evaluation technique with modest memory requirements, giving a solution of satisfactory accuracy. © 1990.
