Abstract: Schiff base, as well as its complexes, have been studied extensively for its interesting properties, such as the ability to reversibly bind oxygen, catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of olefins, transfer of amino group, photochromic properties and complex formation with toxic metals. By reducing the imine bond of Schiff base, a Mannich base or reduced Schiff base is formed, which can construct interesting supramolecular architectures due to their conformationally flexible backbone, as well as bringing the metal ions to close proximity to generate phenoxo-bridged dinuclear complexes, capable of acting as model compounds for simulating the catecholase properties of type-3 copper proteins. In this thesis, solid state structures of a number of supramolecular frameworks using Schiff base and reduced Schiff base ligands have been described. Furthermore, the structural parameters of phenoxo-bridged dinuclear copper(II) complexes of Schiff base Cu(II) complexes and their corresponding catecholase activities have been examined.
