Based on corpus, this study compares the Chinese discourse marker ?suoyi? used by Singapore mandarin learners and Chinese native speakers, in terms of its function and frequency. Not only the use of ?suoyi? is analyzed from a qualitative and quantitative perspective, but also other markers fulfilling similar functions are taken into comparison. The result shows that the functions of ?suoyi? used by both groups are not exactly the same and that Singapore mandarin learners use ?suoyi? more often than Chinese native speakers. The differences are attributable to three aspects that Singapore mandarin learners find difficult in the mastery of discourse markers: failing to eliminate L1 interference, neglecting the polysemy of discourse markers, and insensitivity to certain contextual components constraining the choice of markers. This last aspect is rarely mentioned by previous studies in discourse marker acquisition. Finally, an initial tentative teaching model of discourse markers is proposed. This study might be relevant in Chinese discourse marker research and pedagogy.
