Abstract: This thesis concerns about how public policies affect the performance of a closed economy. We focus on the growth and welfare effects of these policies. We assume that the economy has perfectly competitive final-good and R&D sectors and monopolized intermediate-good sectors. We consider various policy comparisons in the following three chapters. All the three chapters draw on the same basic model, Romer?s 1990 model of technical progress through variety expansion. The main results mainly consist of basic analytic ones and numerical ones from simulations with particular parameter values as well as sensitivity analysis.
