Abstract: Robert Kho-Seng Lim (1897-1969) was a famous medical character in Republican China. During the 1920s-1940s, he played a significant role in shaping Chinese modern medicine. By examining Robert K.S. Lim¿s career in China, this thesis aims to discuss Lim¿s contributions to modern medicine and reveal the turbulent progress of modern medicine in this period. My study analyzes the difficult trajectory of modern medicine in Republican China as it was affected by multiple factional strife, which caused the failure of modern medical elites to coordinate their efforts either in the formulation of medical education, standardizing a nationwide medical system or doing wartime medical relief. It offers an instance of China¿s cosmopolitan embrace of different strands of ¿modern¿ science; and a case of China¿s meandering and conflicted path towards its own brand of modernity.
