On the basis of a first-order shear deformation beam theory, a finite element method is presented for the analysis of free vibration of arbitrarily stepped beams. The effects of shear deformation, step geometry, step eccentricity and multiple stepped sections are investigated. The phenomenon of dynamic stiffening is also analysed and discussed. The numerical results show the importance of including bending-extension coupling for certain eccentrically stepped beams. © 1994.
