Abstract: This thesis provides an in-depth study of the first person deixis(??) in pre-Qin (??) Chinese classic Zuo Zhuan (<??>). Based on a thorough data survey and careful analysis of eight frequently used first person deixis forms, in specific, wo(?) , wu(?)?yu(?)?gua ren(??)?bu gu (??)?gu (?)?chen (?)?and one? s name (????), this study is built upon a pragmatic theoretical framework. To defend our argument that a close inner-relationship has existed between the specific choices of deixis forms and four contextual factors , namely, utterers and interpreters , social world , mental world and physical world factors, ample examples and illustrations from Zuo Zhuan text have been given as supportive evidences.
