Abstract: The growing energy demands and limited petroleum resources have extensively motivated the application of optimization studies in the petroleum industry. Therefore, this PhD study focused on developing an advanced decision support tool for three main problems related to well-drillings and infrastructure installations, namely (1) placement, (2) allocation and finally (3) ordering / timing problems. The well placement was studied in the first work by formulating a unified model for drillings in rectangular oil reservoirs with the economic considerations. This was a complex non-convex spatio-temporal mixed integer nonlinear programming model (MINLP) for whose solution an existing outer approximation algorithm was modified. To our knowledge, this was the ?rst contribution that used mathematical programming for well placement in a real dynamic sense by honouring the constitute partial differential equations. Next, the infrastructure placement and allocation problem was studied. This extended MINLP model included the sub-surface dynamics of irregular shaped multi-reservoirs oil fields and their surface elements. Finally an integrated infrastructure placement, allocation and timing/ordering problem was addressed and another two-stage algorithm was tailored to solve this final MINLP model.
