Abstract: This thesis holds the view that the Systemic Functional (SF) approach based on Hallidayan Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) is viable for the discourse analysis of graphic design texts of the printed medium. Graphic design texts are multisemiotic in nature and existing research frameworks for the analysis of graphic design texts are inadequate to account for the dynamic and symbiotic meaning creation processes found in these texts. This thesis investigates existing SF frameworks to discover and address important issues which have surfaced as a result of adopting the SF approach. Building on the current SF research and addressing specific systems related to graphic design texts, an SF framework is constructed. Finally, this thesis employs various tools from the SF framework to analyse an authentic graphic design text to reveal the inter- and intra- semiotic processes and how symbiotic, multiplicative meanings are created.
