Abstract: Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are low cost alternatives to conventional expensive p-n junction photovoltaic. The best DSSC devices? efficiencies have improved from the ~7% since its inception in 1991 to approximately 15% recently. These improvements have been reported on rigid glass substrates which limit applications to flat rigid surfaces. For flexible and portable applications, a polymer substrate is preferred. However plastic DSSCs have lagged behind in terms efficiency as the plastic substrate cannot withstand the high temperature sintering process required for high quality TiO2 films. In this thesis, I report the fabrication and optimization of flexible DSSCs. In particular, the issues of poor TiO2 film quality in low temperature fabrication, poor utilization of infra-red radiation in DSSCs are tackled. In addition, the milestone of solid-state flexible DSSCs, which is more compatible for industrial roll to roll process, has been reached.
