Abstract: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and it brings lots of debilitating consequences to those who survive it. There is abundant evidence that apoptosis contributes considerably to cell death after ischemic stroke. In the past decade, a novel mitochondrial&45;enriched protein&45;modulator of apoptosis 1&40;MOAP&45;1&41; has been identified to be a Bax&45;associating protein. In various cell lines, MOAP&45;1 promotes caspase&45;dependent cell death under death stimuli by working as an effector for Bax. The present study demonstrates for the first time that MOAP&45;1 protein is widely distributed in the mouse brain, and it is specifically expressed by astrocytes, microglia, macrophages, and dendritic cells. However, whether or not its deletion causes any changes in the response to a catastrophic event such as stroke requires further investigations.
