dc.description.abstract | The formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) is a crucial factor for the success of tissue engineering. Therefore we developed a biotechnological platform to generate peripheral blood-derived angiogenic cells (BDAC) in clinically relevant numbers. BDAC were demonstrated to be functional in vitro and in vivo. Due to their secretion of angiogenic factors and proteases, latter were shown to be responsible for an enhanced endothelial sprouting, BDAC were implicated to be involved in early stages of angiogenesis. This opens avenues for generating patient-specific cells from an easy accessible and renewable cell source and overcomes current short-comings associated with autologous cell therapy. We further developed an array of functional assays, which first allows the identification of pericytes in vitro. Using this array we could show that BDAC resemble a haematopoietic pericytic population, which was described only in vivo so far. Therefore this allows a more detailed study of haematopoietic pericytes. | |
