Abstract: In this thesis, through designing series of tensile confinement samples by introducing different types of notches into BMGs, the mechanical properties of a Zr-based monolithic BMG have been systematically investigated. It is revealed for the first time that tensile elongation can reach up to ~25 % before fracture, and homogeneous tensile plasticity can reach as high as 10 %. The tensile strength can reach as high as 3.6 GPa, which is approximately E/20 (where E is Young¿s modulus), approaching the theoretic strength limit and placing BMG among the highest strength materials. In addition, the unique fracture morphology, with features like cracks, micro voids and dimple like structure are also observed. Finally, the strain hardening phenomenon is unveiled and is attributed to the high level of tensile stress.
