Abstract: Motivated to enhance the fluorescence of upconversion (UC) nanostructures, this thesis studied the effects of surface, surface coatings, and plasmonics on the fluorescence of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) NaYF4:Yb,Er (one of the most efficient UC materials) nanostructures. NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoshells (hcp phase) with interior cavity of 7 ? 2 nm and shell thickness of 4 ? 1 nm were synthesized using thermal decomposition. The effects of surface and surface coatings on the fluorescence of these nanoshells were studied under 980-nm near infrared excitation. The plasmonic effects of Au-Ag metallic nanoshells on the fluorescence of NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoshells were studied. The local field enhancement and photothermal effects of the Au-Ag nanoshells were also investigated. The results showed the UC fluorescence could be enhanced by the surface coatings and plasmonic effects.
