Abstract: Prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases is a socio-economical burden to our society. To improve effectiveness and efficacy of treatment processes, it is paramount to advance our understanding of GI physiology and pathophysiology. The mechanical properties of GI smooth muscle are an integral component of GI motility which is responsible for important digestive processes. Studies have also shown that the mechanical and geometrical properties of GI smooth muscle change in conjunction with GI diseases. GI smooth muscle passive viscoelasticity and Ca2+-dependent contractile properties influence its overall mechanical responses. The GI smooth muscle passive and active mechanical properties are dynamic, and can be regulated by mechanical stimulations. The GI smooth muscle mechanical phenomena are mathematically modelled in this thesis. The simulation results are verified with relevant experimental data. The implication of smooth muscle mechanics on GI physiological functions and diseases are discussed in the context of a mechanical adaptive framework.
