Abstract: This paper examines Singapore's economy and the need to adopt advanced manufacturing technologies to compete in the increasingly internationalised marketplace. The OECD countries are already repositioning their manufacturing strategies, and Singapore would do well to do likewise. Among other things, Singapore is presently enhancing its R&D capabilities to match that of the OECD countries. The crucial role played by the government in developing R&D capabilities and a world-class manufacturing infrastructure is discussed.
