Abstract: The compilation of Huangming Tongji (Comprehensive Annals of the Imperial Ming), was the first comprehensive history of the first two centuries of Ming dynasty in the annalistic pattern, has significant implications in Chinese private historiography. It was first published in 1555 and re-edited and supplemented about a dozen times during the following decades. This thesis tents to examine Chen Jian?s (1497-1567) Huangming Tongji by exploring the work?s sources, content, style as well as the author?s critical comments, and attempts to determine the reasons behind the compilation and also a private historian?s position on the early Ming history (especially pertaining to the Hongwu?s political climate and the Yongle?s usurpation).
