Abstract: The objective of this thesis is to propose a methodology to study tire-pavement noise generation mechanisms and evaluate the factors that affect tire-pavement noise. A three-dimensional computer model using the finite element approach is developed in this thesis to predict tire-pavement noise in the near field. The model is composed of two main components: a tire pavement interaction model and a sound propagation model. The developed model is further used to study the factors effect to tire-pavement noise. Factors such as surface friction and vehicle cornering are considered. Finally, a parametric analysis is performed to study the impacts of wheel load, vehicle speed and tire width on tire-pavement noise. The proposed approach can serve as a useful analytical tool to study the problem of tire-pavement to improve our understanding of the various issues involved, and enhance our capability in formulating effective strategies to reduce tire-pavement noise.
