Abstract: The overall objective of this thesis was to design and synthesize pi-conjugated molecules for two photon absorption (2PA) materials and organic field effect transistors (OFETs). It was found that octupolar molecules with D-pi-A braches could achieve high 2PA cross section, and molecules with imide groups, CN groups, and imine (=N-, such as pyrazine) moieties could accomplish n-channel semiconductors. Considerable pi-extended conjugated molecules with varied physical and optical properties have been successfully synthesized following above strategies. Firstly, a family of TAT based molecules were synthesized and characterized, and they exhibit high two photon absorption cross section 1620 GM. In the later parts, by introduction of electron withdrawing group to tuning the LUMO energy level, a series of organic semiconductors with lower-LUMO energy level up to -4.21 eV were achieved; thereafter the OFET devices fabricated from their solution processed films exhibited high electron mobility up to 0.056 cm2V-1s-1.
