Abstract: Acenes and their derivatives have attracted considerable attention because of their potential applications in the electronic industry. We aim in the present work to develop (i) new soluble acenes, (ii) stable longer acenes and (iii) n-type acenes by introducing N-atoms or fusion with five-membered ring. Firstly, the synthesis of large-size linear and star-shaped dihydropyrazine fused pyrazinacenes is presented. Secondly, a series of acenaphthopyrazine derivatives, prepared by the use of acenaphthylenequinones to simultaneously incorporate a pyrazine unit and a five-membered ring, are described. Their application as semiconducting material was also preliminarily investigated. Finally, a new isomer of emeraldicene and its extended derivative are highlighted. They possess a narrower band gap and show considerable potential in the ambipolar application. Based on this success, a route has been proposed and attempted to explore the possibility of the novel five-membered ring fused nonacene.
