Abstract: This thesis describes research efforts aimed at developing different types of luminescent nanocrystals with various morphologies and unprecedented optical properties. We first presented a rational design of a new class of core-shell upconversion nanoparticles. Our results demonstrated that the optically inert NaYF4 layer around a lanthanide-doped NaGdF4@NaGdF4 can effectively prevent surface quenching and give access to unprecedented and tunable optical properties for a broad range of activators, even at very low concentrations (down to 1 mol% for Dy3+, Sm3+, Tb3+ and Eu3+). Next, we reported a simple method for systematic control over metal sulfide nanocrystals with multi-morphology from single-source precursors. Particularly, we also have demonstrated that the growth of ultrathin ZnS nanowires was achieved by oriented attachment mechanism. Finally, a proof-of-concept the self-assembly of upconversion nanoparticles has been demonstrated. These advances on these luminescent nanocrystals offer exciting opportunities for important biological and energy applications.
