Abstract: The main objective of this thesis work is to investigate the mechanics of level ice-vertical structure interaction, in particular the conditions in which steady-state self-excited vibration (SSSE) occurs, and thereby to formulate a predictive framework for its occurrence. The current work produces a set of well-planned and documented model test data, and presents several new findings which serve to improve our fundamental understanding of the subject; the most significant original contribution being the proposal of a dimensionless parameter which governs the occurrence of SSSE of structures across different scales ? prior to this it has not been possible to relate information reliably across structures of different scales. With the proposed dimensionless parameter, the range of ice velocities in which SSSE occurs can be predicted. A proposed scaling approach of ice model testing, which is shown to be relevant in the simulation of SSSE, is another significant contribution of the current work.
