Abstract: Although all graphites share the same idealized chemical structure, there are marked differences in their propensities for oxidation. We find the extent of oxidation broadly correlates to the defect density in the starting graphite measured by Raman spectroscopy. Further, we report an efficient solvothermal process to achieve deep deoxidation of the functionalized sub-oxidized graphene oxide (sub-GOx) in organic solvents. This opens the possibility to use conductive graphene directly in coatings or in nanocomposite blends for large area and/or flexible substrates by spin-coating, ink-jet printing and spray-coating. Finally, we measure the scattered light intensity of these functionalized sub-GOx solution using dynamic light scattering technique. We are able to successfully use disc-like model to extract out the average sheet size of these functionalized sub-GOx and we find good match of the sheet size that is determined by atomic force microscopy.
