Abstract: Latecomer firms from emerging economies have long wowed the world with their technological catching-up over the last decade. This thesis work is driven to explore the reasons why some latecomer firms could become upcoming innovators by utilizing external resources, i.e. open innovation. The main aim of my thesis work is twofold. The first is to study how these firms use the innovation strategy of the latest generation ¿ open innovation ¿ for technological catching-up. The second is to further explore the application of open innovation in a specific type of innovation that could make latecomers an actual economic powerhouse ¿ disruptive innovation. The findings in this thesis advance the knowledge of the strategic management literature of both open innovation and disruptive innovation, and contribute to the academic views of latecomer firms from emerging economies.
