Abstract: A new design of an ATM multicast protocol with congestion control based on the active network concept was developed. The design includes a mechanism for dynamic injection of user's congestion control codes and the active node environment for runtime execution of these codes. The overheads of the system were measured and the feasibility of the proposed solution demonstrated through a realization of a customizable video multicast application. The application demonstrates how the active nodes automatically exercise local congestion control to prevent congestion by reducing traffic through filtering of the video stream.
