Abstract: Due to the various advantages of heterogeneous catalysis over homogeneous catalysis such as ease of handling, separation from the reaction mixtures and recovery of the catalysts, heterogeneous catalysts are increasingly employed for the synthesis of various useful and valuable chemicals. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the applications of heterogeneous catalysts in the catalytic green synthesis of various fine chemicals and rare sugars. First part of the thesis involves the synthesis of industrially valuable flavanones and jasminaldehyde using modified magnesium oxide catalysts. Second part of the thesis focuses on using commercially available phosphonium ionic liquids as high thermally stable phase transfer catalyst to synthesize the pharmaceutical and agrochemical important fluoroaromatics by Halex reaction. In the study on introducing heterogeneous catalysis for the synthesis of rare sugars, two projects were conducted.
