Abstract: In this thesis, the synthetic work towards two natural products that have interesting biological activity and structure is presented. In the first part, the initial synthetic studies towards Sieboldine A are presented. It is a Lycopodium alkaloid with acetylcholine esterase inhibitory properties which can possibly be used in the treatment of Alzheimer?s Disease and related neurological diseases. The second part of the thesis focuses on the second natural product ? Bielschowskysin. It was isolated from the Pseudopterogorgia kallos coral in the Caribbean. It possess significant antimalarial activity as well as in-vivo cytotoxicity to two human cancer cell lines ? EKVX nonsmall cell lung cancer (GI50 < 0.01?M) and CAK-1 renal cancer (GI50 = 0.51?M). Various synthetic strategies including aldol, alkylation, Sonogashira coupling and macrolactonisation reactions are shown towards the construction of a macrocyclic precursor to the key cycloaddition steps to form the polycyclic structure.
