Abstract: In this dissertation, we focus on enhancing application performance through better resource management in the DTN. First, we propose a mechanism to capture application semantics and show how to incorporate them into existing DTN routing protocols to improve application performance. Next, we consider resource management in a class of applications in which nodes in the DTN participate in completing application-related tasks. We consider a real life taxi scenario that falls into the described class of applications. We show how the taxis can collaboratively achieve better load balancing of free taxis in each region to reduce the long waiting time of clients. Finally, we look at the routing security issues that affect resource usage in the DTN. We demonstrate how to exploit popular routing metadata to improve the effectiveness of attacks and we identify the scenarios where DTNs are most vulnerable to such attacks.
