Abstract: Graded Media and Bit Pattern Media (BPM) are two candidates which can push the areal density limit higher. In this thesis, ion implantation is suggested as an alternative technique to fabricate graded media and BPM. The heavier ion species showed more reduction in coercivity and saturation magnetization. Lateral straggle, which plays a very important role in determining the maximum achievable density, was found to be lower for heavier ion species and lower energies. Based on these studies, advanced media are fabricated and their magnetic properties and studied. As an example, for the first time, graded media were fabricated by implanting ions into the recording layer in such a manner that the doping profile had its peak at the top surface of the recording layer and a gradual tail went deep into the recording layer, hence creating a continuous gradient in anisotropy across the recording layer. Such effects in perpendicular media and their correlation with structural and magnetic properties were investigated.
