Abstract: This thesis provides designers with a game design methodology for conceptualizing handheld augmented reality games using domain knowledge (education) as the primary factor for motivating design concepts, decisions and outcomes. Such an approach can facilitate various formal and informal real-world activities (i.e. through gamification or as serious games) on highly pervasive mobile devices, including smart phones and digital tablets. Based on a three-part study, insights and design guidelines are centered on a theoretical conceptual framework that dictates a triarchic and coherent interplay between application, interaction and system considerations (Study 1). A game design model is then proposed that takes on educational (knowledge) requisites that are grounded on a selected learning theory. These are taken into the design and development process of an implemented prototype, and evaluated for its learning effects (Study 2). Real-world issues during the prototype¿s interdisciplinary development are examined to elaborate on the model¿s practical usage (Study 3).
