dc.description.abstract | This thesis proposes an economical and scalable remote monitoring system, e-Guardian, for the lone elderly. The heart of e-Guardian is a Base Station (BS) which forms a multi-hop wireless sensor network (WSN). By placing a number of Range Extenders (REs), the coverage area can be greatly extended, allowing seniors wearing Wearable Devices (WDs) to walk anywhere within the area. As all WDs send data to BS, network traffic at BS may be overwhelming which limits the scalability of the network. To avoid this, e-Guardian takes a decentralized approach by processing raw sensor data locally in WDs instead of streaming to BS. An interrupt-driven fall detection algorithm and an ADL (activities of daily living) classifier using a digital MEMS accelerometer have been designed to allow host processors to process only upon interrupts and sleep the rest of the time, thus achieving several months of standby time. | |
