Abstract: Considering the growing recognition of online virtual worlds for children as part of the repertoire of children¿s digital play platforms, this thesis aims to investigate the characters in online virtual worlds for children from a systemic-functional perspective. Most significantly, a systemic-functional framework is established in this thesis to facilitate the multimodal analysis of virtual world characters. Using this framework, the various meaning-making functionalities of virtual world characters, such as name semiotics, body semiotics and clothing semiotics, may be systematically examined. Because of the hypermodal Theme-Rheme relationship between user-controlled avatars and their user cards in online virtual worlds for children, virtual world user cards are also investigated in this thesis. To facilitate the study of virtual world user cards, a framework using the principles of Cluster Analysis (Baldry and Thibault 2006) is formulated here. The Generic Structure Potential (Hasan 1977) of virtual world user cards is also derived in this thesis.
