Abstract: Focusing on the Chinese Muslims? travel accounts to the Middle East during the Republican China(1911-1949), this thesis studies the images of Middle East countries from the view of Chinese Muslims who lived under both Chinese and Islamic traditions, and their feelings toward the faith and the discourse of nation-state. Efforts also go into discussing that how the travelers used the travel experience to weave a publishing network in which these accounts were published and disseminated, thus brought about a nationwide sense of community. It argues that the tradition of Islam and the horizons expanded by the faith provided a source and choice for the Muslims who lived under the Chinese social and historical circumstances to construct their identity. And they employed this special identity to negotiate with the governor and other ethnic groups.
