Abstract: The thesis is primarily aimed at obtaining an in depth understanding of the underwater ad hoc medium access control problem and to demonstrate how MACA based protocols address it well. A software simulation framework for MAC protocol evaluation and unified modem software implementation was developed as part of this work. MAC protocol implementation was carried out in ARL OFDM modem and many experimental studies were carried out. Mathematical protocol analysis of MACA based protocol and proposed variations were also successfully completed. Many novel MACA protocol variations were developed and implemented in ARL modem and tested successfully at sea. A combined centralized and distributed protocol suite proposal for underwater network standardization is also proposed. Some interesting results on multi-channel MAC protocols using MACA based protocols for Underwater Acoustic Networks (UAN) are presented. A discussion on a novel concept of utilizing latency in networks to provide higher throughput than previously considered possible is also provided.
