Abstract: The formation of intermetallic glass has been studied in the Zr-Cu and Zr-Cu-Ti systems. Two optimum glass formers are located near but separated by intermetallic phase. It is proposed that two thermodynamically favored glass formation ranges are present under quenching. Kinetically, the TTT curves of these alloys were constructed. It is surprisingly found that the intermetallic compound has a higher critical cooling rate than those of the optimum glass formers. In the ternary system, with the addition of 5 at% Ti, the phenomenon of formation of intermetallic glass is observed near composition Cu51(ZrTi)49. In the composition range covered by the Cu2ZrTi intermetallic glass, the evidence of formation of intermetallic glass is not convincing enough. Also the glass formation range in the ternary system is calculated. Further investigation needs to be carried out to understand the mechanism of formation of intermetallic glass.
