Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the preparation of a small molecule gel, the process comprising heating a mixture of a gelling agent and a solvent to dissolve the gelling agent in the solvent, cooling the mixture to form a gel, and adding a branching additive to the mixture either before, during or after the heating, but prior to cooling. The invention also relates to a gel comprising a small molecule gelling agent, a solvent an a branching additive.
