Abstract: Spreadsheet is widely applied to sophisticated problem solving nowadays. Building applications on spreadsheet for computing or analysis becomes an important topic in both business and scientific world. However, given different options on spreadsheet software and developing methods, performance differences of them are not yet been clearly identified, and how to make the selection is rarely addressed. This study intends to fill this gap by identifying the performance differences as well as ease of implementation of different options and providing a comprehensive guideline for method selection. We define the Internal, External and Hybrid programming methods of building spreadsheet applications. Performance comparisons of these methods are conducted with regards to speed on data transferring and algorithm computing. We further develop the comparison results into a guiding framework on method selection. Comprehensive implementation instances such as Sort, Shortest Path, TSP and VRP spreadsheet applications are built with structural routines and library codes to provide people easier start to build spreadsheet applications.
