Abstract: This thesis, entitled Conversation Analysis on Mandarin TV Talk Shows, applies Conversation Analysis as the basic theoretical method to investigate the conversational communications in mandarin TV talk shows. The data used in the thesis is from LuYuYouYue (¿A Date With Lu Yu¿), a popular TV talk show in mainland China, which is a talk programme of inter-exchange model. Through the analysis, the thesis aims to examine the conversational sequencing structure and the rules and characteristics of the communication process. Mediated interaction is a type of performance. In TV talk shows, it is the lively performative effect that all talk-related behaviors center on. Since conversations involve performances by parties, they always accommodate each other according to certain conversational frames, which work as the backgrounds and preconditions for the developing of and shifting between conversational roles. All these accommodations constitute conversational strategies.
