Abstract: This thesis studies two approaches to realize graphitic ribbons. A bottom-up synthesis method was developed to grow tubular graphene on nickel nanowire templates. High quality graphene layers grown were found to cover entire template surface with layer number controlled by precursor feeding time. A multi-step growth mechanism was proposed, in which superficial graphene layers grow from the reactive edges formed during the joining of nascent graphene flakes. After metal core removal by wet chemical etching, a closed-edge graphitic ribbon was obtained that exhibits electric field effect. The second approach involves Co-assisted catalytic etching of graphite. The etching was found to initiate from the defects due to catalytic hydrogenation. A strategy to control the position of etching is developed and exploited to realize a graphitic ribbon that is enclosed by pure zigzag edges by etching from the edges of pre-defined graphitic strips.
