Abstract: This thesis covers reactions involving sulfur-containing substrates catalyzed by organo-manganese complexes. Chapter 1 provides an outline on the selected manganese compounds, and explains the importance of sulfur containing compounds. The concept of Green Chemistry is also introduced. Chapter 2 presents the usage of CpMn(CO)3 as a catalyst in the photo-transformation of thiols into disulfides, producing dihydrogen as the only other product. This route exhibits 100% atom economy, and makes it a cleaner and greener method for disulfide synthesis. Chapter 3 involves the photolysis of Mn(CO)5Br with organic and water-soluble thiols. The reaction scheme is resembles that of CpMn(CO)3, but the reaction has to be carried out under aerobic conditions. Chapter 4 introduces a new route towards the synthesis of thiocarbamates and dithiocarbamates from isocyanates and isothiocyanates with thiols using CpMn(CO)3 in the presence of light. The transformation is efficient; achieving a TON of a few hundred under mild conditions.
