Abstract: The current research suggests an optimized definition model of polysemous verbs in advanced-level monolingual Chinese learners? dictionaries, making syntagmatic features of each sense stand out to facilitate encoding operations of learners? dictionaries. The optimum reached in this research is based on both the large-scale syntagmatic study of 100 high-frequency polysemous verbs and the awareness of pedagogical weaknesses in the presentation of polysemous verbs in current Chinese learners? dictionaries. Firstly, the large-scale syntagmatic study was conducted based on the multi-featured framework ?Grammatical functions ? arguments ? collocations?. As a result, a hierarchy was established to illustrate the differences of syntagmatic restrictions between senses. Secondly, examination of 100 selected high-frequency polysemous verb entries in Chinese learners? dictionaries reveals that the definition style current Chinese learner?s dictionaries applied is not suitable for presenting senses? syntagmatic features. Although everyday verbs are presented as being highly polysemous, detailed polysemic information is probably counterproductive to the productive needs of Chinese foreign learners Finally, a more pedagogically motivated approach is suggested, which is that senses in different categories should be presented in different ways according to their syntagmatic features.
