Abstract: This thesis describes the synthesis and spectroscopy of luminescent gold(I) and platinum(II) complexes of tetracene and pentacene bearing ligands. It is demonstrated that auration and platination of tetracene and tetracenyldiacetylide lead to significant red-shifts of the 1La absorption band and the corresponding fluorescence of tetracenyl core. Notably, the Pt(II) ion has stronger perturbations on the tetracenyl ring than the Au(I) ion. Two series of dinuclear platinum complexes of tetracenyldiacetylide and pentacenyldiacetylide with different auxiliary ligands were synthesized. Spectroscopic studies show that the complexes with anionic, pi-donating ligands showed absorption and fluorescence lower in energy than those with neutral, pi-accepting ligands. The compounds 5,12-bis[(triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl]tetracene and 6,13-bis[(triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl]pentacene can be singly deprotected, paving the way for the syntheses of multichromophoric systems. Interestingly, the trichromophoric compounds bearing anthracene, tetracene, and pentacene absorb over the whole visible region.
