Abstract: The optical properties and dynamics of noble metal nanocrystals were investigated in this thesis. Comparisons on the refractive index sensitivity and photoluminescence properties were made between Au and Ag nanocrystals in chapters 2 and 3. Nanocrystals of similar sizes and extinction peak positions were prepared. Ag nanocrystals were found to be more sensitive to refractive index changes than Au due to its larger dielectric function. A larger local field enhancement around Ag nanocrystals also led to more efficient emission than the Au counterparts. Emission arising from both radiative interband recombination and radiative plasmon decay were also observed from Au nanooctahedra. Chapter 4 investigated the nonlinear switching behaviors of Au nanocubes and nanooctahedra. Both saturable absorption (SA) and reverse SA were measured at low and high excitation intensities respectively. The assembly of various Au nanocrystals onto graphene oxide (GO) was studied in chapter 5. A red-shift and broadening of the plasmon resonances were observed upon attachment of Au nanocrystals on GO. The two-photon excited photoluminescence of Au nanocrystals was increased at least 4-fold after assembly while surface-enhanced Raman scattering of GO was increased at least 9-fold after assembly.
